New Hampstead HS Student-Athletes Recognized for Excellence with Prestigious Awards

Both of this year’s prestigious local awards for most versatile athlete belong to students at one SCCPSS school – New Hampstead High School!

New Hampstead's Gianna Brown, a senior in the Class of 2025, has been named the winner of the Hollis Stacy Award as the most versatile female athlete in Savannah for the second year in a row.  She was the first Hollis Stacey Award recipient from New Hampstead High School when she was recognized in 2024, and she is the first back-to-back winner of the award ever.

Brown has been a standout athlete for New Hampstead in volleyball with 172 kills and 156 aces, flag football - in which she was named State Defensive Player of the Year, basketball - where she averaged 25 points and 13 rebounds, and soccer - where she received All-Region honors. The Hollis Stacy Award has been presented annually to the area's most versatile and outstanding female athlete since 1993. The award was named after Savannah’s Hollis Stacy, a three-time U.S. Women’s Open champion and 18-time winner of the LPGA Tour who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2012.

The most versatile male athlete award in the Savannah area is the Ashley Dearing Award. Marking its 72nd year in 2025, the prestigious honor went to New Hampstead High star quarterback Ra’Shawn Truell.  Setting statewide passing records in football this year, Truell was also a talented player on the school’s basketball team where he was he was an All-Region 1-4A first-team pick, averaged over 20 points per game and scored over 1,000 career points. He also excelled in baseball with a .333 batting average and played on the school’s boys’ volleyball team.

In December, Truell was awarded the Michael Finocchiaro Award for the second year in a row as Chatham County's top football player. Then earlier this month, he was named the Lawton M. Calhoun Award winner by the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame.  That award recognizes Chatham County's most outstanding all-around athlete. Truell is the first athlete to win all three of those awards in the same year.

To be eligible to win the Dearing Award, an athlete must play football, basketball and a spring sport. The winner is chosen in a vote by Chatham County athletic directors and local media.

Congratulations to these two outstanding SCCPSS student-athletes!!
